NatureMalta.com – Public Statement on Marineland Ltd (Mediterraneo Marine Park, Malta)
Date: 16th August 2025

NatureMalta expresses its deep concern regarding the ongoing operations of Marineland Ltd, trading as Mediterraneo Marine Park in Malta. Despite presenting itself as an educational and family-friendly attraction, substantial evidence shows that the facility engages in practices that cause significant harm to wildlife.

Investigations, expert assessments, and visitor testimonies have revealed:

* Stress behaviours in dolphins and sea lions, such as repetitive circling and listless floating — clear indicators of psychological distress.
* Inadequate enclosures, far below international welfare standards, lacking space, stimulation, or shelter.
* Neglected veterinary needs, with allegations that injured animals continue performing to avoid show cancellations.
* Poor water quality and hygiene, with murky, algae-affected pools.

These conditions not only breach the spirit of the Maltese Animal Welfare Act (CAP 439) and EU Directive 1999/22/EC, but also contradict the park’s public claims of animal care and compliance.

NatureMalta calls for immediate action:

* Suspension of dolphin and sea lion shows pending a full independent welfare audit.
* Withdrawal of advertising and promotional support for Mediterraneo Marine Park.
* Legislative reforms to establish stronger welfare standards and transparent inspections.
* Investment in ethical alternatives, including wildlife sanctuaries and genuine educational programmes.

The continued operation of Marineland Ltd under its current practices damages Malta’s reputation as a responsible tourism destination and raises urgent ethical concerns.

NatureMalta stands firm in its commitment to ensuring that Malta embraces a future where animals are respected, protected, and never exploited for entertainment.
