BirdLife Malta is the oldest and largest environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) in Malta, established in 1962. Originally known as the Malta Ornithological Society (MOS), it is now part of the global BirdLife International network
Mission and Activities:
BirdLife Malta is dedicated to the protection of wild birds, their habitats, and biodiversity across the Maltese Islands. Its work includes:
- Managing four nature reserves: Salina, Simar, Għadira, and Foresta 2000.
- Running environmental education programs, including the popular "Dinja Waħda" initiative for schools.
- Conducting scientific research, particularly on seabirds, through EU-funded projects.
- Combating illegal hunting and trapping of birds.
- Advocating for environmental policy improvements and the designation of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for birds.
The organization also engages the public through events, citizen science, and campaigns to raise awareness about conservation issues
